WASHINGTON (AP) – Finance Minister Janet Yellen and Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergei Marchenko left a Group of 20 meeting Wednesday when a Russian envoy began talking.
Several finance ministers and the central bank governor also left the courtroom, a prominent official said of the meetings, speaking on condition of anonymity because the event was not public. Some of the central bank ministers and governors who attended the meeting actually turned off the cameras when a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke, the man said.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said of Yellen’s departure: “We clearly support her steps, and this is a sign that President Putin and Russia have become Parisians on the global stage.”
President Joe Biden said Russia should not remain a member of the G-20, the largest international economic organization that promotes economic cooperation between countries.
Psaki reiterated the administration’s position that “we can’t do the usual thing” in the G-20 and other international fora when it comes to Russia.
