In the middle of the central square of Old Warsaw, 19-year-old Ukrainian Yelena weaves her way through the passers-by with a large box around her neck. He is asking for financial support for the refugees of his country to all those who are ready to answer him. “This is what I do after school to help my family”, he stumbles before calling out to the couple consulting the restaurant’s menu. Elena, wrapped in a huge Ukrainian flag, arrived in Warsaw in the first days of the war. “At first it was not easy to integrateHe says, we didn’t speak the language, we didn’t know the country, it was very scary.”
Poland is the main receiving country of Ukrainian refugees. Almost 1.5 million people live in the European country within the borders of the conflict. After seven months of war, their integration has been relatively effective.
