Up to 40 EU monitoring experts will be stationed along Armenia’s international border with Azerbaijan. The mission should not last more than two months.
The EU will send up to 40 of its monitoring experts to the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan. The corresponding decision on Monday, October 17, was adopted by the Council of the EU, the press service of the body reports.
It is noted that this decision follows a quadripartite meeting between President Aliyev, Prime Minister Pashinyan, President Macron and head of the European Council Michel on October 6 and aims to help restore peace and security in the area, building confidence and removing international border between two states.
“The EU’s deployment of up to 40 EU monitoring experts along Armenia’s international border with Azerbaijan aims to build confidence in an unstable situation that endangers people’s lives and jeopardizes the resolution of the conflict,” commented EU diplomat Josep Borrell.
The Council decided that monitoring experts would be temporarily deployed from the EU Mission to Georgia. Today the EU monitoring mission in Georgia is taking immediate steps to ensure that this decision does not affect its monitoring capabilities in Georgia.
The monitoring mission for the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is temporary and should not last more than two months.
Correspondent.net previously reported that a civilian EU mission will be deployed on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which will work with delimitation commissions.
In addition, the media reported that Azerbaijan and Armenia may sign a peace treaty by the end of the year.
