Azovstal has a thousand civilians. Ukraine is ready to exchange Russia’s prisoners of war for a green corridor from the city.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said nearly a thousand civilians were hiding at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. At the same time, the situation in the city is deteriorating. He said this on Wednesday, April 20, at a press conference after a meeting with the head of the European Council.
Zelensky also stressed that he was still willing to exchange Russian prisoners of war for a safe passage for Ukrainian civilians and troops in Mariupol.
According to him, in the territory of Azovstal, which is trying to storm invaders, many civilians – women, children and the elderly.
“The situation in Mariupol is deteriorating. Unfortunately, until now we have not achieved a positive result there. Our soldiers have hundreds of wounded people on their hands. Protecting civilians, they are dying … I want to say that everything will be simple and tomorrow we will help our military and civilians in Mariupol, but I can’t say that, ”Zelensky said.
He added that it is possible to unblock Mariupol by military or diplomatic means, however, Ukraine still does not have enough equipment for the first method, and the Russian side does not agree with the second.
Today it is reported that the sailors and Azov released 500 soldiers from the port of Mariupol.
