The situation has already been observed in the Donetsk region and may negatively affect Russia’s efforts in other areas.
Deteriorating morale, discipline and combat effectiveness of Russian military personnel in combat zones in Ukraine may lead to a temporary suspension of offensive operations in limited areas. This was announced by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a report for October 13.

Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine informed that, in particular, in the Donetsk region, some Russian units are receiving orders from commanders to temporarily stop offensive operations due to very low morale and psychological state, the high level of desertion and disobedience to combat orders.
“The statement of the General Staff is probably a reflection of the fact that the Russian units are increasingly disorganized, settling in relatively small and insignificant settlements throughout the Donetsk region, especially in the area of Bakhmut and the city of Donetsk. As these units breach further, they are likely to encounter disparate combat elements, leading to further demoralization and inconsistency in conducting offensive operations,” analysts said.
As ISW emphasizes, the apparent suspension of offensive operations in areas of the Donetsk region, almost the only region of Ukraine where Russian troops are conducting offensive operations, will further complicate Russia’s efforts to conquer additional territory. In addition, it will further worsen the morale and overall breakdown of the combat forces.
It was previously reported that the Russian Federation has sent at least 15,130 prisoners of war to Ukraine since mid-summer.
