In Europe, the number of Russian emigrants seeking economic well-being, whose views are unknown, will increase, the Prime Minister of Latvia said.
The European Union should stop issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens because of the threat to Europe’s security from a “potentially large wave” of immigration from Russia. This was announced on Monday, October 10, by Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins in an interview with The Guardian.

“I think the political dissidents have mostly already left. Now we’re going to get economic opportunists, with a lot of other reasons to emigrate and people with unknown views,” he noted.
Karin noted that European countries should keep the “side door” open for humanitarian reasons, but each such immigration case should be considered on an individual basis.
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland banned Russians from entering on September 19. Even those with Schengen visas issued by third countries cannot get there. Exceptions are made only for diplomats, truck drivers, as well as citizens who entered the territory of these states for family and humanitarian reasons.
Athletistic previously reported that on September 30, Finland closed its borders to tourists from Russia. Most tourist visas have been cancelled.
