Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is illegal and legally void, according to the EU.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on Saturday, October 8, condemned Russia’s desire to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. He emphasized that Brussels does not recognize this decision.
“The European Union condemns in the strongest terms the order of Russian President Putin on the illegal seizure of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the establishment of a government enterprise on this occasion,” Borrell said.
“Russia must fully withdraw its military forces and equipment and return the nuclear power plant to its rightful owner – Ukraine,” insisted the Vice President of the European Commission.
Borrell also noted that it is necessary to organize an increased presence of IAEA members at the station.
“In the interest of the security of the whole of Europe, a strengthened IAEA presence on the ground and their unfettered access to the station is urgently needed. A zone of nuclear safety and security must be immediately introduced without sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine’s integrity. The EU fully supports the efforts of the IAEA Director General to this end,” Borrell stressed.
He also added that the EU remains unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, and demands that Russia immediately and unconditionally withdraw all troops and its military equipment throughout Ukraine.
It will be remembered that on October 7, explosions rumbled in the temporarily occupied Energodar, cutting off electricity, water and Internet in the city.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that around 500 Russian military personnel were still in the ZNPP. It is necessary to demilitarize the territory of the station.
