During the more than 20 years of his rule, Putin has tried to project an air of power and control.
Information about disagreements within the Kremlin, published by the Western media, is rapidly spreading in the Russian Federation and undermines the appearance of the stability of the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is stated in the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Rumors of confrontation within the dictator’s inner circle have “undermined the impression of power and control” that Putin has tried to portray during his more than 20 years in office, military analysts said.
“Some Russian milbloggers, after the sharp criticism of the leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and the head of the PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin towards the high command of the Russian military, began to suggest that there are two factions in the Kremlin,” said of the report.
It is noted that Kadyrov and Prigozhin are part of a faction that aims to continue the war and achieve their ideological goals, regardless of the cost.
At the same time, the opposition faction among them consists of officials who want to negotiate with the West to keep their properties and residences, but are too afraid of a direct confrontation with Putin.
Presenting major divisions in Putin’s inner circle and challenging his decisions, even if they are silent, could portray the dictator as weak, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
“The veracity or falsity of this presentation is less important than its showing to the public that Putin is most likely to rely on for further support in his war,” military analysts said.
