Germany issues visa to Russian spy despite intelligence objections – media

The German government issued a visa to a Russian spy, despite all warnings from the relevant authorities.

Suspected of spying for Russia, the German government issued a visa to enter Germany. This decision was made despite objections from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and warnings from foreign intelligence services. Der Spiegel reported this on Friday, October 7th.

According to the publication, a citizen of the Russian Federation, considered by the special services to be an agent of Russian intelligence, was initially denied a visa. However, during the negotiations on the accreditation of employees of the German embassy, Russia raised the issue of issuing a visa to this citizen and requested that the issue be resolved positively.

As a result, the Russian filed a new application in August, and this time he was granted a visa, ignoring intelligence warnings.

This incident led to the launch of an internal investigation which found that the BfV’s warning had been ignored due to an official’s mistake. As a result, the government recognized the mistake in issuing the visa, and the visa was revoked.

Germany is “rather soft” about identified Russian spies, the newspaper notes. According to media reports, the German government has expelled several Russian intelligence officers who worked under diplomatic cover.

According to Western intelligence agencies, no other country in Europe has as many Russian agents masquerading as diplomats as they do in Germany, the publication added. The media added that, according to experts, there are still at least a hundred Russian spies left in the country today.

It should be noted that earlier the publication Der Spiegel prepared material on how Russian spies monitored the training of Ukrainian fighters in Germany.

In addition, the Russian Federation planned to organize its own spy as an intern at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, but he was caught.
