The Georgian department called a diplomat to get an explanation of the incident during a visit to the occupied territory.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia summoned the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus to Tbilisi Anatoly Lis. The reason was the visit of the head of the Belarusian regime Alexander Lukashenko to the unrecognized “republic of Abkhazia”. This was reported by the Radio Liberty project Echo of the Caucasus.
The agency expressed “grave concern” to the diplomat about this incident, and also sought further clarification from the Belarusian side.
“The meeting concerns the visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to occupied Abkhazia and meetings with representatives of the occupation regime,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Local media reported that Lukashenka’s unofficial visit to Abkhazia was taking place without Tbilisi’s permission.
The self-proclaimed president of Belarus also revealed that he had a long discussion about the “Abkhaz issue” with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Sochi on September 26.
The “Republic of Abkhazia” (according to the constitution of Georgia, the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic) is a partially recognized state on the territory of Georgia. In addition to Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria, as well as five self-proclaimed republics, have also recognized its “independence”.
Official Tbilisi considers Abkhazia as part of its territory, which is occupied by Russian troops.
Athletistic previously wrote that Lukashenka arrived in Abkhazia to discuss “issues of bilateral cooperation” and “current threats.”
In addition, Lukashenka previously said that he was ready to recognize Crimea as Russian after “when the last Russian oligarch recognized Crimea and started supplying goods there.”
