The German Chancellor commented on the results of the “referendum” in the occupied territories of Ukraine and the mobilization in Russia.
The results of the “vote” on the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine do not matter to Germany, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on Wednesday, September 28.
“We will not accept the results of these fictitious ‘referendums’ and will continue to support Ukraine with unwavering strength,” Scholz stressed.
Germany will continue military aid to Ukraine
“Germany is supporting Ukraine as much as it can and at the same time doing everything possible to avoid a direct conflict between NATO and Russia,” Scholz said. The German chancellor has repeatedly stated that Ukraine will receive Soviet-designed heavy weapons from other NATO countries, its stocks will gradually be replenished with Western equipment as part of the so-called change the ring.
As part of such an exchange, Germany has transferred more than 100 infantry fighting vehicles and tanks to Ukraine, Scholz recalled. “There are critics who think we only give helmets,” he added. According to the Chancellor, the self-propelled howitzers, multiple rocket launchers and ZSU Gepard delivered to Kyiv have already made “an invaluable contribution to the success of the Ukrainian armed forces in the east of the country.”
“Mobilization is an act of desperation”
Commenting on the move announced by Putin, Scholz called this move another mistake by the Russian president. “Putin is making mistakes after mistakes. He can immediately end this war by withdrawing his troops and then start negotiations with Kyiv,” Scholz explained.
The chancellor called the move “an act of desperation and a somewhat fearful reaction to the failures of the Russian armed forces in eastern Ukraine.”
Asked if he believed Putin could use nuclear weapons on Ukraine, Scholz said no one could know for sure. “Who knows? But, like US President Joe Biden, I want to turn to Russia and say very clearly: forget it,” said Scholz.
