More than 3.9 million voters voted to ratify the updated Family Code.
Cubans overwhelmingly approved same-sex marriage and the possibility for such couples to adopt children in a national referendum. This was reported by Reuters on September 27, citing the country’s national election commission.
More than 3.9 million voters (66.9%) voted in favor of adopting the updated Family Code, while 1.95 million (33%) were against it.
“Justice has been served,” tweeted Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
It noted that the 100-page document legalizes same-sex marriage and civil unions, allows same-sex couples to adopt children and advocates an equal division of household rights and responsibilities between boy and girl.
According to preliminary data from the electoral commission, 74% of the 8.4 million Cubans eligible to vote took part in the referendum.
It will be remembered that the vote on the legalization of same-sex marriage in Cuba took place on September 25.
