German law enforcement is looking for a ship owned by a businessman close to Putin.
German law enforcement officers searched one of the world’s largest superyachts, the Dilbar, owned by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov. This was reported by the German edition of Spiegel.
Officials of a special commission called Ukraine on Tuesday, September 27, searched for this floating vehicle. Note that the commission includes criminal police and tax investigators from North Rhine-Westphalia.
60 law enforcement officers were involved in the search, the prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt am Main said.
At the time of the raid, law enforcement officials were looking for additional evidence in the proceedings against Usmanov on suspicion of violating the law on foreign trade, money laundering and tax evasion.
The fact that the authorities are taking criminal action against a multi-billionaire sanctioned by the EU is also due to the fact that German sanctions law still proves to be completely unusable in practice.
The employees of the special commission assumed that they could prove that Usmanov lives in Germany and is therefore also obliged to pay taxes. Since 2014, he has avoided taxes in Germany for at least 555 million euros.
The Dilbar yacht has been in dry dock at the Lürssen shipyard in Hamburg for several months, where it was undergoing maintenance when Russia invaded Ukraine. The authorities then did not allow the ship to leave German waters because of the sanctions against Usmanov.
Dilbar was later transferred to Bremen. The yacht is subject to a disposal ban and therefore “can no longer be sold, leased or encumbered”
The total cost of the yacht is 600 million dollars. The ship was named after Usmanov’s mother.
