The United Kingdom is the first Western country to impose sanctions against Russia for holding pseudo-referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The imposition of sanctions was announced on Monday, September 26, by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley.
“Fictional referendums held at gunpoint cannot be free or fair, and we cannot recognize their results. They follow a clear pattern of violence, intimidation, torture and forced exile in territories Russia occupied Ukraine,” the minister said.
According to him, the sanctions are “directed against those behind the fabricated votes, as well as against those who continue to support the aggressive war of the Russian regime.”
Thus, the British sanctions list includes 33 officials and collaborators who are in the temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine, especially the head of the “Kherson government” Sergey Eliseev, the “Minister of Education and Science of the LPR ” that Ivan Kusov, the leader. of “Zaporozhye government” Yevgeny Balitsky and deputy head Yevgeny Solntsev.
The restrictions include the IMA Consulting agency, tasked with leading public campaigns to promote “referendums”, as well as the Goznak company, “known for its monopoly on the production of “tens of millions” of state documents , including expedited passports in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.”
The oligarchs Diyos Nisanov and Zarakh Iliev, Iskander Makhmudov, Igor Makarov are included in the sanctions lists.
In addition, restrictions were imposed against 23 members of the board of directors and board of directors of Gazprombank, 16 members of the supervisory board and board of Sberbank and its management, and 10 heads of Sovcombank.
In total, there are more than 1,200 individuals and more than 120 legal entities from Russia on the UK sanctions list, including more than 120 oligarchs, whose combined global fortune is estimated to exceed £130 billion.
Earlier, the United States promised to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation for the “referendums”.
