Helsinki does not want Finland to become a transit country for citizens of aggressor countries.
Finland is preparing to introduce a complete ban on entry into the country for Russian citizens. This was announced by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pekka Haavisto, in a press conference in New York on Wednesday, September 21.
“Today we have decided to start preparing a national decision on how we can limit or completely stop the flow of tourists, and this national decision may include a new law that will be made very quickly, or an interpretation of the existing ones rules,” the diplomat said.
He said that the work has already started, it is being carried out by experts from different ministries under the leadership of the Foreign Ministry.
“Finland does not want to be a transit country, even for Russians with Schengen visas issued by other countries, and now we want to control this traffic,” Haavisto said.
Recall that on the eve of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of the country. After that, the Russians quickly rushed to Russia’s borders with Finland and Georgia.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called on his Finnish counterpart to join the Baltic countries and Poland in closing the border with Russia.
