Rally in Armenia for withdrawal from CSTO

In case of withdrawal from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Yerevan could receive military aid from the West, the protesters said. Their actions took place during Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Armenia.

On Sunday, September 18, a rally was held in Freedom Square in the center of Yerevan, where participants demanded Armenia’s withdrawal from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Several hundred more activists held a rally near the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, where US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi had arrived earlier. Among other things, they said that Armenia, in case of withdrawal from the CSTO, could receive military assistance from the West.

Representatives of the European Party of Armenia (EPA), led by its chairman Tigran Khzmalyan, took part in the actions, Interfax wrote. According to Khzmalyan, Russia and Turkey signed an “anti-Armenian treaty”, which resulted in the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“If we leave the CSTO and the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union – Ed.), join NATO and the EU, then we will return what we lost, our lands,” the head of the EPA told reporters.

Pelosi’s visit to Armenia

Nancy Pelosi flew to Armenia on September 17 amid an escalating border conflict with Azerbaijan. Speaking at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on Sunday, he assured that the US will support Armenia’s security and democracy.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry criticized Pelosi’s remarks. His statement that Baku had started a border conflict with Yerevan was “a serious blow to efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

“Such unilateral measures and baseless statements serve not to strengthen the fragile peace in the region, but, on the contrary, to increase tension,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Raising the border

The conflict on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border escalated on the night of September 13. More than 230 people died as a result of the conflict. Yerevan accused Baku of shelling the border towns and villages. Azerbaijan said the shelling was a response to a “massive provocation” from Armenia. On the evening of September 15, a ceasefire agreement was reached between the parties.

Armenia has officially asked for help from Russia and the CSTO member countries. In response, the CSTO decided to send its mission to “assess the current situation.”

Experts say that the CSTO, which provides for the military protection of any member, has shown itself to be a dead organization that actually no longer exists. More on this in the Incapacitated Russia material.
