Charles III thanked members of Parliament for their condolences on the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
In his speech, he quoted the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare: “As Shakespeare said of the late Queen Elizabeth, she is a model for all living princes.”
The king stressed that Parliament is “the living and breathing instrument of democracy” and vowed to follow his late mother’s example in committing to a constitutional form of government.
“I cannot help but feel the weight of history that surrounds us and reminds us of the important parliamentary traditions in which members of both houses dedicate themselves with commitment to the good of us all,” said Charles III.
Recall that Queen Elizabeth II died on the night of September 8 at the age of 96 in the Scottish castle of Balmoral.
His eldest son Charles succeeded to the throne and was proclaimed king on 10 September.
