The night lighting of the tower costs only 4% of the monument’s annual electricity bill. Energy savings will not be significant.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, will propose reducing the lighting hours of the Eiffel Tower. The reason is the energy crisis and the climate crisis. It was reported by Le Journal du dimanche.
It has been noted that the tower’s 336 golden spotlights fade at 1 am, but it is suggested that they disappear at 11:45 pm, when the last visitors leave the tower.
Eiffel Tower management company SETE explained that contrary to popular belief, lighting the tower at night is only 4% of the monument’s annual electricity bill, and the flashing of 20,000 LEDs that flash for five minutes at the beginning of each hour is energy efficient equipment. Therefore, the proposal, which will be announced on September 13, is symbolic.
According to SETE President Jean-Francois Martins, the energy savings will not be phenomenal, but “as the most visited monument in the world, we must lead by example.”
It will be recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron said that the country has passed the end of the “time of prosperity”, its citizens should prepare for a difficult winter and future economic difficulties.
