In the Kharkiv region alone, the Armed Forces of Ukraine recovered 2.5 thousand square kilometers. The counter-offensive is also continuing in the Kherson region.
The Ukrainian military retook about 2,500 square kilometers during the counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region. The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported this in a summary of results on September 9.
It was noted that Ukrainian forces are likely to clear pockets of disorganized Russian troops caught in the zone of rapid advance of Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk, Izyum and the Oskol River.
According to ISW, the Ukrainian military can destroy Russian positions around Izyum if they cut Russian land lines north and south of Izyum.
On September 9, Ukrainian troops continued their offensive against Kupyansk and Izyum and were taking steps to isolate the group of Russian Izyum troops. If the Ukrainians succeed in cutting the Russian land lines, they will have the opportunity to create a pocket around Izyum and knock out most of the Russian positions in northeastern Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin is shifting resources to the Kharkiv-Izyum line in an attempt to prevent a Ukrainian counteroffensive, while refusing to speak publicly about Ukraine’s progress in the Kharkiv region.
ISW notes that the UAF counteroffensive likely prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to call a September 9 meeting with top Russian security officials and politicians. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin would not comment on “the situation around Balakliya and other events in the “special operations” zone.”
It is also reported that the counter-offensive in the Kherson region continues in parallel with the operations on the Kharkiv-Izyum line. Ukrainian forces continue to attack Russian pontoon and ferry crossings in the south on a daily basis, but maintain a tight operational silence that may make it appear that Ukrainian forces are not advancing.
Remember, last night, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that more than 30 settlements are back under Ukrainian control in the Kharkiv region.
