In Georgia, a jury acquitted a taxi driver who abandoned two Russian tourists at Gombori Pass after a conflict over Ukrainian music played by the taxi driver. This was announced by the driver’s lawyer Amiran Bokuchava Irakli Chomakhashvili, reports Georgia Online.
At the same time, the prosecutor’s office said that the conflict arose over money.
According to the lawyer, the taxi driver was supposed to transport tourists from the Tbilisi airport to a hotel in the city, but on the way, the passengers demanded that the driver turn off the Ukrainian music.
On this basis, a dispute arose between them. As a result, the taxi driver went in the opposite direction, climbed the Gombori Pass, where he dropped off the Russians and left.
Later, the Georgia prosecutor’s office published its version of events, according to which the fight was about money.
The Russians filed a lawsuit against the driver, claiming he kidnapped them and illegally detained them on ethnic grounds.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the taxi driver, who was called through the Yandex app, overcharged the fare from the airport to the hotel from 23 to 193 lari (from about $8 to almost $70). When the tourists refused to pay, he took them to a deserted area and demanded 500 lari (about $180) for their return to the city. The passengers got out of the car, while one of them was injured, because at that moment the driver started the car.
The taxi driver was threatened with 7 to 10 years in prison.
However, the jury ruled that Bokuchava’s actions did not fall under Part 3 of Article 143 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (Illegal imprisonment of two or more people). According to the lawyer, the meeting ended with a score of 12:0.
