Scientists note that the average temperature slightly exceeds -2°C, while the air temperature usually reaches -10°C.
An abnormally warm winter has been recorded in Antarctica. The average air temperature in winter is -2.13 degrees Celsius. This was reported at the observation station Academician Vernadsky.
The previous record was set in 1998, when the air temperature was 0.4°C lower than the current year.
It is noted that the high air temperature covers most of West Antarctica, the Antarctic Peninsula (near where our Galindez Island is) and the Weddell Sea water area behind it. At the same time, the average winter temperature is about ten degrees below zero.
The coldest winter was in 1958: -17.43°C. At the same time, in August, the lowest air temperature for more than 70 years of the station’s existence was also noted: -43.3°C.
For comparison, this year the absolute minimum air temperature barely exceeded the -8°C mark. As a rule, the minimum temperature value for the year is in the range of -15 … 30 ° С.
Also, due to the abnormal heat in winter, no ice forms near the station. Therefore, scientists from Academician Vernadsky could not stop their research in time. However, it is not possible to study the properties of snow, because it is mostly wet and sticks together easily. More than 2.5 meters of snow fell during the season.
Earlier it was reported that the sky in Antarctica was painted in pink and plum shades due to the eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai volcano.
