He noted that on July 15 this year, the digital infrastructure of the Albanian government departments was subjected to a strong cyber attack, which resulted in its destruction and data theft. Rama assesses the damage caused as “insignificant”, compared to the original intent of the attackers. All systems restored, “irreversible data deletion did not occur.”
“In cooperation with partner agencies engaged in the prevention of cyber disruption and sending their teams of specialists to Tirana, it was possible to establish without any doubt that the attacks on July 15 were not actions by some independent groups of cybercriminals, but an act of state aggression. . An in-depth investigation gave us confirmation that the cyber attack against our country was organized and sponsored by the Islamic Republic of Iran, involving four that attack group against Albania,” said Edi Rama.
Of the four teams, he said, one had previously carried out cyberattacks against Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Cyprus.
The Prime Minister noted that Albania’s strategic allies were informed about the findings of the investigation and shared evidence with them.
“Because of this, the Council of Ministers decided to immediately cut off diplomatic relations with Iran. The decision was announced by an official note from the Iranian Embassy, within 24 hours, with all diplomatic and administrative -technical personnel and security. This is a drastic step, which we do not like, but is forced and fully proportional to the severity and risk of a cyber attack that threatens to paralyze civil services, destroy systems and steal data and electronic communications of government agencies,” Edi Rama emphasized.
As the Balkan Observer clarified, the cyber attack took place shortly before the World Summit of a Free Iran associated with the Iranian opposition, which will be held in Albania on July 23-24. The forum was canceled the day before the incident due to a possible terrorist threat.
