The representatives of Georgia and the European Union discussed reaching a new level of relations. The European Union expects judicial reform, the rule of law and media freedom from Georgia. Tbilisi promised to fulfill all conditions. On Tuesday, September 6, DW reports.
“The seventh meeting of the EU-Georgia Association Council is the first in a new phase of relations between the European Union and Georgia after it was given a “European perspective”, while Moldova and Ukraine have already received the status of candidates for on accession to the EU,” the newspaper wrote.
During the meeting, the European side noted that in order to successfully move towards the European Union, Tbilisi needs to make more efforts in the field of judicial reforms, the rule of law and media freedom.
Also, the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, emphasized that the country must have a national consensus on joining the European Union.
Borrell emphasized the EU’s commitment to Georgia’s territorial integrity and pledged special support in the field of cybersecurity and combating disinformation.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili assured in a press conference that his government is committed to comply with all EU standards and is fully ready to cooperate with all political parties and civil society.
Remember, the European Commission decided to review the reforms implemented by Georgia to grant the status of a candidate for EU membership in 2023 instead of December this year.
