Truss made good on his promise that after he was elected to office, Zelensky would be the first world leader he would formally speak to.
British Prime Minister Liz Truss accepted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s invitation to visit Ukraine. This was announced on Tuesday, September 6, by the press service of the British government.
“In his first telephone conversation with a foreign leader since taking over as prime minister, Truss reaffirmed his full support for the Ukrainian people and said Ukraine could count on long-term British assistance,” said Downing Street in a statement.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was the first world leader to speak with the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss.
On the eve of Truss, he was elected the new leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister. He received 57.4% of Conservative Party members, while his rival, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, received 42.6%.
On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth II accepted the resignation of Truss predecessor Boris Johnson. He gave Truss an audience and asked him to form a new government.
