Scientists are in talks with French electricity supplier EDF to be given a day’s notice to reduce their electricity consumption.
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is making plans to shut down its particle accelerators, including the Large Hadron Collider, amid an energy crisis. About this, on Sunday, September 4, The Wall Street Journal wrote.
According to the head of the CERN commission on energy management, Serge Claudet, the organization is discussing with the electricity supplier – the French company EDF – a scenario where the operator will warn a day in advance of the need to reduce electricity consumption.
“This will allow the Large Hadron Collider not to shut down, but instead shut down the other particle accelerators and reduce power consumption by 25 percent,” Clode said.
The organization needs to avoid sudden power outages that could damage $4.4 billion worth of equipment, he said.
The Large Hadron Collider, more than 26 km long, is located on the border of France and Switzerland. It is used to study protons and other elementary particles.
It was previously reported that Ukraine could become a “green energy hub” for Europe and increase electricity exports to the European Union.
