The West has played into Putin’s hands with skepticism for fear of sparking a nuclear war, Riga believes.
Latvian President Egils Levits and Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks called on NATO allies to provide Ukraine with more modern tanks and aircraft. Riga also urged the West not to weaken opposition to the Kremlin. This is what Letvis and Pabriks said on Friday, September 2, in an interview with The Times.
“The West, the United States, the European Union, all Western democratic states should not only support, but increase their military assistance to Ukraine. I believe that the West should give Ukraine all the weapons it needs,” said of the Latvian president.
He also drew attention to the fact that Ukraine is very effectively using weapons that have already been transferred to it.
According to the Minister of Defense of Latvia, the West “encouraged Vladimir Putin” by doubting it for fear of provoking a nuclear war, and therefore he should help Kyiv “in everything but himself its military, so that it can liberate the entire territory occupied by Russia.”
“Russia’s information war and propaganda have a huge impact. Many in the West really believe that any support for Ukraine can lead to further escalation of the conflict and anger Putin, the Kremlin, Russia. But the only thing that provokes Russia is weakness,” emphasized Pabriks.
“I don’t see any reason why Ukraine shouldn’t get Western armored vehicles. Why not? Just because Russia might get upset?” he added.
The head of the Latvian Ministry of Defense also compared Russia’s war against Ukraine to World War II, where Moscow behaved like the Nazis.
Recall that after Russia’s war against Ukraine, the Latvian authorities revoked 761 residence permits of Russians.
