Mikhail Gorbachev’s funeral will take place on Saturday, September 3, at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, and the farewell ceremony for the first and last president of the USSR will take place at the Hall of Columns in the Russian capital. This was announced on Wednesday, August 31, by his daughter Irina, Reuters reports.
It is noted that the chapel is open to the public from 10.00 to 14.00 Moscow time.
The Hall of Columns at the House of Trade Unions in Moscow has been used for funeral ceremonies of prominent Soviets. Here they said goodbye to Stalin when he died in 1953, and before that – to the founder of the USSR, Vladimir Lenin.
The last Russian politician whose funeral ceremony was held in this hall was Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who died in April of this year.
Mikhail Gorbachev died at the age of 92 on the night of August 30 in Moscow after a serious and prolonged illness. It is known that he recently had kidney disease and underwent hemodialysis.
The politician will be buried next to his wife Raisa, who died in September 1999.
Gorbachev is known to have declared that the world would be better, more stable, safer and fairer if the USSR still existed.
