A man suspected of mass shooting on the New York City subway on Tuesday morning was arrested after police received information from the public on the Crime Stoppers hotline, authorities said.
Frank Robert James, 62, was arrested Wednesday afternoon, about 30 hours after the shooting, after being seen walking the streets of Lower Manhattan, authorities said at a news conference this afternoon.
“We hope this arrest will bring comfort to the victims and to the people of New York City,” said Kichant Sewell, commissioner of the New York City Police Department. “We have used all resources at our disposal to collect and process relevant evidence directly related to the shooting of Mr. James. We were able to make his world smaller very quickly. “No one can escape.”
James, who fired 33 gunshots during the incident, faces federal terrorism charges during mass transit, which carries life in prison if convicted, said Breon Peace, a U.S. attorney in Eastern District of New York. .
“The government will show, among other things, that James crossed the state line to commit a crime and transferred materials to commit a crime on the state line,” the Peace Office said. It can be read in the statement.
James is known to local law enforcement, with nine first arrested in New York and three in New Jersey, said James Esig, NYPD chief investigator. He bought a gun in Ohio in 2011 because he was not convicted of the crime, Essig said.
Authorities said James wore a reflective construction jacket, solid hat and mask and boarded the N train, where he carried out the attack in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Most likely, he first used smoke grenades before firing at the passengers. Ten people were injured from the gunshots, while 13 were injured as a result of smoke inhalation, falling or panic, authorities said.
Essig said James escaped amid the chaos, boarded the R train when he entered the station and then left the other station.

James was first named as a man interested in the hunt after he was identified as a U-Haul rental van who may have been involved in the violence, authorities said.
The key to the van was found at the subway station along with other items allegedly belonging to the killer, including a credit card in James’ name. Authorities said James rented the car in Philadelphia. Later it was about five blocks from the subway station.
