Parliamentarians voted for a draft appeal to the world community with a call to condemn and stop Russia’s violations of the rights of prisoners of war.
The Verkhovna Rada appealed to the international community accusing Russia of violating humanitarian law against prisoners of war in Ukraine. In particular, we are talking about the intention of the occupiers to conduct a so-called “martial tribunal” on them. This was announced by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak on his Telegram channel on Tuesday, August 29.
He noted that 309 representatives of the people in the plenary session voted for the adoption of the relevant draft appeal to the UN, Council of Europe, European Union, OSCE, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the parliaments and governments of the countries of the world.
In the document, the Rada called on the world community to strongly condemn the actions of the Russian Federation and the occupation administrations that aimed to prepare the so-called “military tribunal” on the prisoners of war of Ukraine: fighters of the Azov regiment. Such a “trial” effectively violates the rights of prisoners of war to an impartial and normal trial of law, as provided for by the Geneva Convention and other international treaties.
Ukraine also called on the international community to condemn the actions of the Russian Federation, which, in violation of its obligations to the UN and the ICRC in relation to Ukrainian prisoners of war who laid down their arms in terms of their further exchange, are now hostages.
The parliamentarians also called on international organizations, foreign parliaments and governments to make every possible effort to prevent the creation of a “trial” with an illegal death penalty.
The Rada also proposes to place responsibility on Russia for numerous violations of the rights of prisoners of war committed during the international armed conflict that it released on the territory of Ukraine.
