Similar sanctions were also imposed against 87 senators of the Parliament of Canada in connection with Ottawa’s decision to blacklist all Russian senators. The Canadian Senate has 105 seats.
The United States has imposed sanctions against Russian representatives at several stages. Thus, on March 11, 12 members of the lower house of the Federal Assembly, including the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov and the speaker of the Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, fell under the restrictions. On March 24, sanctions were imposed against 328 representatives, as well as against the State Duma itself as an institution. Thus, at least 340 deputies are included in the American blacklists, in total there are 450 seats in the State Duma.
Canada imposed sanctions against 160 Russian senators on March 24 “for facilitating and condoning violations of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the European Union to impose an oil embargo on Russia. He also noted that Europe must show a clear readiness to renounce all of Russia’s energy resources.
