German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for the creation of a unified European air defense system.
Speaking at the Charles University in Prague on August 29, Scholz said that building a common air defense system in Europe would be cheaper and more efficient than at the national level. According to him, “created together, the system would increase the security of the whole of Europe,” according to Der Spiegel.
In his speech in Prague, Scholz also called for EU enlargement, writes Deutsche Welle. According to the Chancellor, the countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia should become part of the EU.
This is an extension in favor of the European Union. These days, the question arises again of where the dividing line will be drawn between a free Europe and a neo-imperialist autocracy, the chancellor said.
During the speech, Scholz said that Germany should take on special responsibility for building Ukraine’s air defense and artillery capabilities. According to him, Berlin will continue to help Kyiv and in the coming weeks will send modern weapons to Ukraine, including air defense systems, radars and drones.
Recall that in June the leaders of the EU countries granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for EU membership. EU leaders also agreed to grant candidate status to Georgia after the country fulfills a number of conditions. Candidate status is also held by North Macedonia (applied in 2004), Albania (2009), Serbia (2009), Turkey (1987) and Montenegro (2008).
