Residents of the Iraqi capital are protesting after Shiite imam Muqtada al-Sadr’s announcement to withdraw from politics.
The announcement by Iraq’s most influential Shiite imam, Muqtada al-Sadr, that he was withdrawing from politics sparked protests in Baghdad. Because of this, a curfew was implemented in the city. This was reported by the Iraqi edition of Al-Hadas on Monday, August 29.
The imam made the announcement after Ayatollah Kadhim al-Khaeri announced his resignation from spiritual leadership in Iraq.
The latter urged his followers to support the Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Al-Sadr’s supporters stormed the parliament building in July and protested against Mohammed al-Sudan, who planned to run for prime minister.
In response to Al-Sadr’s departure from politics, supporters of the theologian gathered in the center of the capital calling for the resignation of the government.
Due to the unrest in Baghdad from 15:30 local time, local authorities announced a curfew.
Recall that troops were sent to the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, in connection with the next seizure of parliament by activists.
In addition, earlier in Baghdad, the offices of the two parties were blown up.
