NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that NATO and the United States should increase their presence in the Arctic against the backdrop of increased Russian military activity in the region.
“NATO must strengthen its presence in the Arctic,” the Alliance Secretary General said in a comment to Welt am Sonntag.
A few days ago, Stoltenberg, during a visit to Canada, noted that Russia’s capabilities in the High North are a strategic issue for NATO, and that the Alliance needs a strong allied presence in the Arctic region.
The Arctic is a sphere of interest for a number of countries: the USA, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Russia.
Its importance is increasing due to climate change. While regional warming could have catastrophic consequences for global sea levels, the reduction in ice has opened up new shipping lanes and created opportunities for energy production.
With its long Arctic coastline, Russia has been able to influence the region, in part by expanding its military presence. Thus, Moscow announced the opening of Soviet Arctic military bases and the installation of modern weapons, including supersonic ones.
Recall that a group of hackers is selling on the Internet secret military documents containing data on the modern weapons systems of NATO countries and the Alliance’s mission in the Baltic countries.
