Each visa application will be assessed based on motivation and political aspects.
EU member states have to consider political aspects in the issue of issuing visas for citizens of the Russian Federation. This was announced in a briefing on Tuesday, August 23, by the official representative of the European Commission, Anita Hipper.
According to him, each decision to issue a visa should be made on an individual basis.
“It is up to the Member States to do that. They have to evaluate each visa application according to the motivation, while taking into account political aspects, internal security or international relations,” said Hipper.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that EU countries must comply with international obligations and issue visas for humanitarian reasons, as well as to journalists and dissidents.
As reported, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, does not support the idea of introducing a complete ban on visas for Russians.
Recall that on August 31, EU foreign ministers at a meeting in Prague will discuss visa restrictions for Russians against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, some countries support a complete ban on issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens.
