Stoltenberg on war in Ukraine: Putin made a mistake

The Secretary General of NATO emphasized the importance of supporting Kyiv and assured that the alliance can provide it “for many years.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a big mistake when he expected to win the war in Ukraine within days. This was said by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with ZDF, published on August 23.

“President Putin made a big miscalculation. He thought he would win the war in Ukraine in a few days. Now we’ve been fighting for half a year. Russia has suffered heavy losses – Ukraine managed to fight back and recover the area in the north around Kyiv and in the east around Kharkov, as well as stop the offensive in Donbas. But wars are by nature unpredictable,” he insisted.

According to the Secretary General, NATO warned of a Russian invasion last fall, but the outcome of the war could not be predicted.

“Our task is to maximize the possibility of an acceptable outcome of the war from the point of view of Ukraine. The best thing we can do is to provide military, financial, humanitarian and economic support in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.

He assured that the alliance will help Kyiv for “years”, but for this the allies need to increase production.

“NATO has two roles: we must support Ukraine, a close partner. Another task is to prevent the escalation of the war. We do this by sending a clear message to Russia. Our Article 5, the obligation in collective defense, is undeniable. An attack on an ally will lead to a response by the entire alliance “, summed up the secretary general.

Earlier, Stoltenberg predicted a difficult winter due to the “war of attrition” in Ukraine, unleashed by the Russian Federation.
