US plans to transfer Excalibur guided missiles to Kyiv
Such a gift to Ukraine on the eve of Independence Day was reported by Politico, citing a source.
“Excalibur” – high-precision projectiles with extended range. They are developed by Raytheon Missile & Defense. Their deviation from the target is less than two meters. According to the company, one such projectile can replace, on average, at least ten conventional ones.
Preliminarily, guided missiles will not be included in the upcoming aid packages, so you will have to wait a bit.
M982 Excalibur extended-range guided missiles for M777 howitzers are not included in the current tranche of military assistance. They will be provided in the next package.
The shells will become a new high-precision weapon for Ukrainians, with which it will be possible to hit disguised Russian positions and command posts, the newspaper writes.
High accuracy is achieved using GPS, and increased range is the result of the use of aerodynamic surfaces, allowing the projectile to glide to the target from the top of the ballistic trajectory.
The first experience of the combat use of the Excalibur projectile in Iraq in the summer of 2007 was so successful (92% of the shells hit the target within four meters) that the US Army decided to increase the production rate to 150 units per month against the previously planned volumes of 18 shells per month.
It should be noted that Excalibur was delivered to Ukraine back in May. Some experts believe that the strikes on the bridges across the Dnieper near Nova Kakhovka and Kherson were carried out not by Haymars missiles, but by Excalibur shells, which cannot (unlike the Haymars) be intercepted by air defense systems.
The firing range of the Excalibur is up to 57 kilometers.
