This drug is able to protect the thyroid gland from the accumulation of radioisotopes of iodine in case of contamination of the area as a result of an accident at nuclear reactors.
At the same time, the radiation background at the industrial site and directly in the occupied Energodar corresponds to the norm and has not been exceeded, Mayor Dmitry Orlov notes.
It is not necessary to take the drug for prevention in advance only on command, in the case of a really confirmed danger.
I hope you never receive instructions to take this drug. But potassium iodide should be in the first aid kit of every family in Energodar. If you don’t have it in your first aid kit, you can get the drug from next week through your family doctor at the rate of 1 tablet of 0.125 g per person, Orlov said.
Energoatom stated on August 21 that ZNPP is currently operating with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety standards.

Recall that on August 5, as a result of an attack by the Russian military on the Zaporizhzhya NPP, emergency protection worked at one of the power units – and one of the three serviceable power units is now turned off.
During the shelling, the nitrogen-oxygen station was seriously damaged, and the auxiliary building was united. There are still risks of hydrogen leakage and dispersion of radioactive substances, and the fire hazard is also high.
On August 6, due to the shelling by the invaders of the ZNPP, three radiation monitoring sensors around the site where nuclear waste is stored were damaged.
On August 11, the invaders fired at the fire station located outside the ZNPP territory and designed to protect it from fires and extinguish them in case of emergencies at the plant.
On August 13, a 750 kV open switchgear was also damaged.
On August 20, as a result of shelling, one of the transitional galleries was damaged, along which the personnel go from special buildings to power units (overpass), windows were broken in the building.
