The group included three specialists – a Brazilian general, a human rights activist from Iceland and a former UN police commissioner.
The UN has created a group to investigate the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers in the Yelenovka colony. This was announced on Monday, August 22, by the spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, writes CNN.
As indicated, the commission consists of three people:
-
Brazilian General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz, former commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in DR Congo (2013-2015) and the UN stabilization mission in Haiti (2007-2009) – group leader;
-
former Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ingibjerg Solrun Gisladottir;
-
Former Police Commissioner in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (2016-2021) Issoufu Yakubu from Niger.
According to Dujarric, the mission must establish the facts of the terrorist attack in Yelenovka and report them to the Secretary General after completing its work. However, for now, the group cannot work directly at the crime scene, as the situation around the aforementioned colony remains unsafe for a visit.
It can be recalled that UN Secretary General António Guterres announced his intention to create a commission to identify and establish the facts of the Yelenovka tragedy during his visit to Lviv on August 18.
