On August 20, as a result of shelling, one of the transitional galleries was damaged, where the personnel went from special buildings to power units (overpass), the windows were damaged in the building.
Due to Russia’s shelling, the Zaporozhye NPP runs the risk of violating radiation and fire safety standards, Energoatom said.
“At 08:00 on August 21, 2022, the Zaporozhye NPP was operating with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety standards. The periodic shelling of the ZNPP by Russian troops from the MLRS involved a serious risk for the safe operation of the plant,” Energoatom said in a Telegram message.
In particular, on August 20, as a result of shelling, one of the transitional galleries was damaged, where the personnel went from special buildings to the power units (overpass), the windows were damaged in building.
On August 13, as a result of Russian shelling, an open switchgear 750 kV (VRP-750) was damaged.
On August 11, the invaders fired at the fire station located outside the territory of the ZNPP and designed to protect it from fire and extinguish them in case of emergencies at the plant.
On August 6, due to shelling by occupiers at Zaporizhzhia NPP, three radiation monitoring sensors around the nuclear waste site (ISSF) of Zaporizhzhya NPP were damaged.
On August 5, as a result of the Russian military attack on the Zaporizhzhya NPP, the emergency protection worked on one of the power units – and one of the three operating power units is now turned off. During the shelling, the nitrogen-oxygen station and the joint auxiliary building were severely damaged. There are still risks of hydrogen leakage and radioactive substance dispersion, and the risk of fire is also high.
Despite this, Ukrainian staff of the station continue to work and make every effort to ensure nuclear and radiation safety, as well as to eliminate the consequences of damage, Energoatom emphasized.
Currently, the Zaporozhye NPP continues to operate and produce electricity for the needs of the domestic energy system.
However, ZNPP is still occupied and controlled by the Russian military. Because the invaders’ actions are unpredictable, the physical security of the station remains a threat.
Recall that the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense emphasizes that there is a high probability of a large-scale terrorist attack on a nuclear facility.
Earlier it was reported that the invaders were preparing a fake operation to accuse Ukraine of attacking the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
