NATO Secretary -General Jens Stoltenberg noted that the multinational alliance has been planning for a long time to strongly strengthen the eastern border with a military force capable of attacking the invading army.
Stoltenberg in an interview published in the Saturday Telegraph The military leaders of NATO’s 30 member states are preparing a “reset” of the alliance, which should include an increase in national defense spending to avoid future threats.
Some members still fail to follow the Alliance’s guidelines on defense spending. Members are required to give up At least 2% of their gross domestic product for defense.
“We need to make sure that in a more dangerous world we can protect and safeguard all NATO allies,” Stoltenberg said.
The Secretary -General described NATO’s former presence along the border – prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February – as just a “distress” that was more a symbol of the alliance’s unity than anything else. It is not designed to repel an invasion.
“No matter when and how the war in Ukraine ends, the war already has long -term consequences for our security,” he said. “NATO must adapt to the new reality. And that is what we do ».
Stoltenberg said NATO will get a new Strategic Concept Charter in June 2022 at the Madrid Summit. The official document of this strategy not only reflects NATO’s defense efforts against Russia, but should also be the first to mention China as a growing threat.
“I hope China will be an important part of it. “Since China’s rise, the volatility of the global balance of power, has direct consequences for NATO,” Stoltenberg told The Telegraph. “It is also disturbing to see Russia and China working more closely together. This fact must be taken into account.”
