Mooring in Irish ports will be prohibited for all ships, yachts, and pleasure vessels registered under the Russian flag.
The Irish Ministry of Transport has issued a directive for all the country’s ports and port captains to ban from next Sunday, April 17, the entry of ships registered in the Russian Federation. This was announced yesterday by the RTÉ TV channel.
Thus, mooring in Irish ports will be prohibited for all ships, yachts and pleasure craft registered under the flag of Russia, as well as on any such vessel that has changed its registration from the flag of the Russian Federation. to another state since February 24 – the day the full -fledged war against Ukraine began.
The corresponding statement was in response to the European Union’s recent decision to impose sanctions against Russian ships and restrict their access to the ports of European member states.
At the same time, the directive provides for a number of exceptions, according to which ships registered in the Russian Federation are allowed to moor. These include:
-
coal transportation
-
natural gas
-
oil and oil products
-
pharmaceutical, medical and agricultural products
-
for humanitarian purposes
-
in case of emergency situations.
Before entering any vessel in the port under exceptional circumstances, the port must first contact the Department of Transportation for clarification and permission.
As you know, Russia’s transport restrictions on EU ports are part of the fifth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with its war against Ukraine. It will take effect on April 17th.
Recall that in Russia the introduction of new EU sanctions has been compared to an act of international aggression. This allegedly gives Moscow the right to “individual and collective defense.”
