The Office of the Prosecutor General shared the results of the discussion with European partners on the issue of Kremlin responsibility for crimes against Ukraine.

Ukraine and the Council of Europe began discussing the creation of an international mechanism for holding the ruling regime of the Russian Federation accountable for military aggression against Ukraine. This was announced by the Office of the Prosecutor General on the Telegram channel on Tuesday, August 16.

This issue was considered by Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin in a meeting with the Director General for Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Christos Giacomopoulos.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the contribution of the Expert Advisory Group, established by the Council of Europe shortly after the start of the Russian aggression, and cooperation with it in the field of strategic communication to counter the Kremlin’s propaganda.

The Prosecutor General noted the importance of creating an international mechanism to prosecute the top political and military leadership of the Russian Federation for crimes against Ukraine. He also greatly appreciated the support of the initiative of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Giacomopoulos, on the other hand, said that he was amazed at the priorities identified by the prosecutor general as the main ones in the work of the prosecutor’s office. The parties agreed on the importance of effective coordination of international assistance.

“The expertise provided to Ukrainian prosecutors by international partners helps to achieve the main goal – Ukrainian society should feel the victory of justice and the rule of law in force. Therefore, I set myself the task of synchronizing the efforts of all bodies at the international level and within the country,” Kostin summarized.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba spoke in one of his interviews about the problem with the discussion about the tribunal for those involved in war crimes in Ukraine.

Ukraine plans to create a one-time international tribunal to try the top leadership of the Russian regime, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Office of the President expects the creation of an international tribunal for the Russian Federation before the end of the summer.
