The Russian hacking group has focused its attacks on defense and intelligence consulting companies, non-governmental organizations, think tanks and universities, among others, Microsoft said.
The American company Microsoft said that in the months before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian hacker group SEABORGIUM carried out attacks on the Ukrainian government sector. This was reported by the company’s press service.
“SEABORGIUM mainly targets NATO countries, particularly the US and the UK, sometimes the Baltic countries, Northern Europe and Eastern Europe. Such attacks also covered the Ukrainian government sector in the months before the Russian invasion . Microsoft believes that Ukraine, in all likelihood, is not the main focus for this player; however, it is likely to be one of many goals,” the company said in a statement.
The Russian hacker group has focused its attacks on defense and intelligence consulting companies, non-governmental organizations, think tanks and universities, among others.
“It was also observed that SEABORGIUM was ‘attacking’ former intelligence officers, experts on Russian affairs and Russian citizens abroad. Microsoft directly informs its clients that it has been targeted (hackers – ed.) , providing them with the information necessary to protect their account records,” the company said.
Microsoft also noted that current SEABORGIUM campaigns primarily target phishing and user credential hijacking.
Recall that the government team for responding to computer emergencies in Ukraine CERT-UA, which operates under the State Special Communications Service, has recorded 1,350 cyber attacks since the beginning of the year.
