Congressmen have been visiting the island for decades, and it does not conflict with the “one China principle,” Washington insisted.
US congressional delegations will continue to travel to Taiwan as long as it does not conflict with the “one China principle.” This was in a briefing on Monday, August 15, State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
“Congressional delegations have visited Taiwan for decades, and they continue to visit Taiwan. About ten or more congressional delegations have visited Taiwan this year alone. Congressional visits to Taiwan is fully consistent with our longstanding one-China policy,” Price said.
He stressed that China “overreacted” to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan by conducting a series of military exercises near the island.
“We have made it clear that we do not intend to escalate the situation and there is no reason for the crisis,” the official added.
At the same time, the spokesperson recalled that the United States “will not stop flying, sailing and operating in the region in accordance with international law.”
It will be remembered that the American delegation visited Taiwan less than two weeks after the trip to Pelosi Island.
The trip by the speaker of the US House of Representatives drew a strong negative reaction from Beijing. In response, the PRC army conducted a series of military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.
