Diver discovers rare ghostly sea creature in Mexico

A rare predator called a siphonophore eats crustaceans and small fish.

Off the coast of the Mexican island of Cozumel, during a dive, diver Pedro Valencia discovered a fragile and extremely rare group of organisms called siphonophores. The Mirror reported this.

“I was swimming in search of interesting marine life to photograph, and I noticed something more than the other parts swimming around him,” Valencia told reporters in an interview.

After swimming closer, the diver saw that it was a siphonophore, to which the fish stuck. Later, he realized that the fish did not swim on its own, its transparent predator would eat it.

The siphonophore feeds on crustaceans and small fish.

“It was very unusual, so I immediately thought something was wrong. Fish often use jellyfish as protection, but not siphonophores. This is a sign that this is not a symbiotic relationship, but rather a predator- victim relationship,” added Pedro Valencia.

It is noted that the head of the ghostly sea creature pulsates in a rhythm resembling breathing, and the lower body is decorated with tassels that emit white light.

It was previously reported that a beluga whale, lost in the Seine River, died during the rescue operations.
