The Bundestag’s budget committee’s decision to remove Schroeder from a parliamentary bureau was illegal, his lawyers said.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder filed a lawsuit against the Bundestag seeking the restoration of the former head of government’s privileges, which were partially revoked in May. This is what the ex-chancellor’s lawyer Michael Nagel told the dpa agency on Friday, August 12.
Specifically, Schroeder is demanding that he be given back his old office and reinstated staff.
According to Nagel, the statement of claim on behalf of Schroeder was sent to Berlin’s administrative court. The Bundestag budget committee’s decision to remove the former Chancellor from his parliamentary office is illegal, the law office said in a statement.
“Retired Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is no longer performing his so-called “remaining official duties.” However, it does not specify what “remaining official duties” are in general, how to determine whether they have been performed or not, and furthermore, what is the procedure for what should be respected,” the statement said.
In May, it became known that the budget committee of the Bundestag had deprived Schroeder of certain special rights related to his support for the policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The decision was made to close the former chancellor’s office, but Schröder retained his right to a pension and personal protection. According to media estimates, Schroeder’s personnel costs are approximately 400 thousand euros per year. Last year, five employees worked in his office, and the head of the office received more than 10 thousand euros per month.
It can be recalled that the leadership of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) asked Schroeder to leave the party due to image risks.
In turn, Schroeder left the post of chairman of the board of directors of the state company Rosneft. At the same time, he said that he will continue to talk to Putin.
