China secretly brought air defense systems to Serbia – media

Serbia maintains close partnerships with China and Russia, and has also purchased Russian and Chinese types of weapons in recent years.

China has brought the modern HQ-22 surface-to-air missile system to Serbia, the AP reports.

On the morning of Saturday, April 9, six Y-20 transport planes of the Chinese Air Force landed at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla International Airport.

The planes are likely to carry the modern Chinese HQ-22 anti-aircraft missile system, which the Serbian government acquired from China in 2019.

Six planes flew together in the airspace of the two NATO member countries, Turkey and Bulgaria. According to military experts, this should be a demonstration of China’s power and influence.

The Serbian Ministry of Defense did not respond to an AP request for comment. At the same time, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he would show the “final pride” of Serbian troops on Tuesday 12 April or Wednesday 13 April.

U.S. officials have previously advised Serbia to scrap the agreement, as the country’s inclusion in the European Union and Western partners means its weaponry must be compatible with Western weapons types.

Serbia maintains close partnerships with China and Russia, and has also purchased Russian and Chinese types of weapons in recent years.

It will be recalled that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed solidarity with Ukraine and called for an end to the war.
