The Montreux Convention allows the Turkish authorities to block the passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea by military vehicles of those countries at war.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has said that Turkey will not allow warships of countries at war, in accordance with international law, according to Turkish TV channel TR Haber.
“We will comply with the Montreux Convention. We will not allow warships to enter the Black Sea,” Akar stressed.
The Montreux Convention was ratified in 1936. It allowed the Turkish authorities to block the passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea by the warships of those countries at war.
