European politicians are concerned about the close relationship between the two countries. They fear that Ankara will help Moscow overcome the restrictions, Western publications said, citing their sources.
The European Union is considering imposing sanctions against Turkey over its cooperation with Russia. It was reported by the British edition of the Financial Times.
The report says the two countries are cooperating in the fields of energy, finance and trade. However, at present, official negotiations on the imposition of sanctions against Turkey in the European Union have not yet been held. According to the sources of the publication, they have already decided how to “punish” Ankara for this – to put pressure on Western companies and banks to also leave the Turkish market.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, official Ankara has been following the so-called “balanced neutrality.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promotes the idea of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, and has also provided Istanbul as a negotiating platform to end the war.
The publication notes that “balanced neutrality” could be a “window of opportunity” for Russia to avoid sanctions.
It should be noted that The Washington Post, citing the interception of Ukrainian intelligence, reported that on the eve of the negotiations between the presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkey, the aggressor country asked for permission to buy shares in Turkish refineries, oil terminals and tanks.
Currently, there are no signs that Turkey will support these agreements, the newspaper notes. The media is also drawing attention to the fact that in this way Ankara will put its own banks and companies in the country under the threat of secondary sanctions and block their access to Western markets.
It will be remembered that the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, flew to the city of Sochi to talk with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
It was previously reported that Erdogan and Putin met in Iran at the end of July. At that time, the media reported that the Russian leader requested the production of Bayraktar drones in Russia, which became one of the symbols of Ukrainian resistance to Moscow’s military aggression.
