Austin, Texas (AP) – Tesla is making a car designed to be used as a robot taxi and will begin making three new cars next year, CEO Elon Musk told fans at the Texas plant opening .
Musk did not elaborate on the details of the robotics, except that it “looks pretty futuristic.” He also said Tesla will begin building the Cybertruck pickup next year at its new plant in Austin, near Texas. It will then launch a new roadster and new electric mid, he said.
About 15,000 people attended the private event, which hosted the opening of a new facility in Travis County, which also serves as the company’s new headquarters after moving from California.
Musk said Thursday night in a live broadcast on YouTube that Tesla is delivering the first small Model Y SUV made at the new plant, which he believes can produce half a million SUVs a year.
Tesla and Musk often had no goals to start making cars. In 2019, it promised that an autonomous robotic fleet would go next year, but the company’s “complete self-management” software is still underway to test Tesla’s elected owners on public roads.
The company is the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the United States and the world.
Musk said that again this year there will be a New Austin plant ladder in Germany. He also said the company could start developing the robot in 2023. “There will be a massive wave of new products next year,” he told people Thursday night.
Licensed by the county, the event includes interactive tours, food, wine and live entertainment. But the event was banned from the general public and media.
Musk said the Austin-region plant will hire about 10,000 workers.
